My Approach
There are dozens of different styles of therapy, and the differences among them vary from subtle to dramatic. My training is in Modern Psychoanalysis. That means that I am most interested in understanding what you think about everything and everyone, and identifying the things that get in the way of you having what you want in life.
My job is to understand you as completely as possible, and I ask you to help me do that by saying everything. And, I mean everything. It's not as easy as it sounds. We all have become trained to censor ourselves, especially when we are concerned about hurting people's feelings or worried about being judged or criticized.
In our sessions, I focus on listening and understanding. I will ask you questions to encourage you to explain in more detail what is on your mind. Sometimes, these questions will challenge you or make you laugh. I may point out connections among the topics I hear you talk about that might get you seeing something in your life in a new way. My goal is to give you the feeling of being seen, heard, and understood on a deep level.
What might you experience from our work together? I have seen my clients grow less depressed and anxious and more emotionally resilient when dealing with stress. They are taking better care of their health. They are less overwhelmed and frustrated. They are coming up with creative solutions to difficult problems. They are making progress in getting what they want from life.
Research has confirmed that this kind of psychoanalytic therapy yields benefits that go beyond symptom relief (feeling better) and helps to build emotional resilience and flexibility (being better in a lasting way).
